ENDORFUN

Endorfun, the 1995 puzzle game created by Onesong Partners and published by Time Warner Interactive, is perhaps one of the most controversial games ever to be released. There is no violence, no sex, no horror so how did this happen?

When you first boot up the game, you'll be greeted with a rather unusual opening screen.Bright colours swirl around with a rhythmic soundtrack and the phrases "Ifeel joyful now" "I love being alive" and "I can do anything" repeat on loop. This game is very New Age with messages of peace and positivity scattered throughout. Subliminal messages that is!

Underneath the fantastic audio, inaudible to the conscious mind, are several positive subliminal messages. These range from "I am at peace" to "I love the world and the world loves me" and the slightly more sinister "it's OK for me to have everything I want". There are 100 messages in total and most are hidden beneath the soundtrack.

However you feel about the controversial messages and their effect on the mind, there's no denying that the soundtrack is nothing short of excellent. The rhythmic music was performed by The O Band, a group of several musicians fronted by the Nigerian drummer Onye Onyemaechi. The tribal world music is truly at odds with the main game. The music aims soothe the soul and calm the nerves while subliminally making you love the world. The game does the exact opposite as the difficulty and speed ramps up to the point where you're surprised your monitor didn't fly out the window - maybe subliminal messages do work.

The game-play consists on navigating a coloured cube across a shaped grid, matching the correct colour with the whatever square may pop up. It all starts easy enough as you have room to maneuver and line up your cube but it all ramps up as as the play field decreases and more coloured tiles appear.

There are three different game-play modes: Longevity, Abundance and Quickening. Longevity gives you continuous play with no time limit while Abundance gives you a set number of levels to complete within a certain timeframe. Quickening also does this, but the levels get progressively faster and more difficult.

It's a pretty simple puzzle game with very little to write about. It's highly entertaining in small bursts, but can become repetitive in longer game sessions. Overall, I found it a highly entertaining diversion, but I'm unsure whether that's me or the subliminal messages speaking.
