Mulan was Disney's 36th animated classic released in 1998. The reviews were very kind bestowing upon it a return to a quality many critics thought were missing since The Lion King four years earlier. I only partially agree with this; I adore Hercules and revere The Hunchback of Notre Dame to a high degree but Pocahontas deserves its lack of love.
The last Animated Storybook title to be based on a feature film, Mulan certainly ups the ante from previous installments by included many new features such as a print studio and other creative elements. These new features do little to improve on the actual game-play as a whole which sticks to the tried formula.
There are only two separate puzzles which are simple enough for its target audience. Older children and adults will breeze through them, but will perhaps get more enjoyment from the improved animations and skits. To compensate, there are a minor puzzle elements within the book pages which adds a more traditional adventure feel to an otherwise simple series. These range from matching games to sliding puzzles. Each page also requires you to retrieve a scroll in order to continue the story making for some interesting yet simple logic puzzles that kids will love.
This isn't perhaps the best in the series - the reduced number of mini-games to make way for of some banal printing segments makes sure of that - but the high quality animation, presentation and writing will keep adults interested as much as the kids.
